Quran 2:25 – Real Meaning Of The Ayah "تَجۡرِى مِن تَحۡتِہَا الۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ."
I was reciting Surah Bakarah Ayah 25 And came across this line: “تَجۡرِى مِن تَحۡتِہَا الۡأَنۡهَـٰرُ”.
If I look at the litteral meaning, It means underneath which river flows.
But it didn’t sit right with me. Gardens with rivers flowing from below. So upon searching for a bit, I came across another interpretation which roughly means the following: https://quranthinkers.com/description-of-jannat-heaven-by-quran/
Just wanted some clarity on this subject. How does one decide what exactly Quran is referring to here?

When you go to some green hilly area you find that the gardens on hills and mountains and the streams flowing at the bottom of the hills or mountains. This is what it means.

Thank you for your reply. Jannah as explain by the litteral meaning is not what it actually will be but a “mutashahibah” i.e. explained in the form of tamseel right?
I actually wanted to know the deeper meaning behind the ayah (if any) except for the literral meaning.

Allegory, or Tamseel, is employed to make abstract concepts more relatable and easier to understand, as their true nature is beyond human comprehension. There are no hidden or esoteric meanings; rather, it simply conveys that by following God’s guidelines, we can attain a blissful existence in Jannah.

A part of me hopes that there is a deeper meaning to this. The reason I say that is the fact that a promise of a garden with rivers flowing from beneath might sound charming to an Arab of 1400 years ago who is living in the hot desert. But it may not motivate a modern human say already living in a green area.

Humans usually like such places therefore such places becomes resort for tourism.
The principle statement in the Qur’an that there you will have your wishes come true.

As you mentioned, “usually”. Does that mean this ayah is only for a subset of humans that like the greenery? I for a fact know many people who prefer skyline over greenery.
The reason behind me posting this question was to understand if this ayah actually refers to the literal meaning and if so, why.
Quran says it’s in simple arabic (arabi mubeen). So just looking at this one ayah raises some questions/confusions for me.

Human nature generally and the Arab cultural norms particularly are in view when Qur’an talks.
Peculiar or unusual behaviour are not taken into account at every point. To understand such instances in quran one should see how Qur’an takes care of human needs or problems. And for those who are somewhat different will have their wishes come true too and their problems solved.
For example Qur’an talks about many fruits but doesn’t mention all the fruits. Qur’an talks about having beautiful spouses in Jannah. There can be people who don’t want to married. These examples shows the bounty of God and blessing awaiting in Jannah.
