  • Is Spending The Entire Charity On Close Relatives A Right Thing To Do?

Posted by Nadeem on September 8, 2024 at 7:42 am

I always feel sorry about millions of poor people and people suffering because of war in various countries. I wish I could help them all but in practice all the charity I can afford is not sufficient enough to fully help even one siblings.

What is the guidance from Allah. Is the above practice of giving it all to a single sibling is acceptable or the charity amount needs to be divided amongst various categories of needy people such as, parents, siblings, neighbors, relatives, orphans, immigrants, women needing marriage, sick people, people suffering because of war or natural disasters and millions of needy people from tens of other categories?

An extension if this question is documenting a will giving away part of assets to poor. If the charity portion of assets is not sufficient enough to fully support a single sibling, can I give it all to that sibling or portion of charity amount need to be divided amongst various categories of needy people?

A companion of the prophet demonstrated his wish to give all his wealth in charity. The prophet advised him to not to leave his children poor after him.

Further the prophet advised to give one third of one’s estate away in charity. And that is enough.

People need money to make money to make charity.

Thank you for your reply Dr. Irfan. Sorry I wasn’t very clear with my question.

I am not overly paying to charity to the point of putting my family in financial difficulty. Instead whatever rightful portion of my earnings is dedicated to charity, I end up giving it all to one of my deserving siblings.

      My question was..

Is giving all the charitable amount to a single person, a sibling, every year, a right thing to do or is it advisable to split the charitable amount amongst various categories of needy people.

The only guidance we have is that our parents and relatives have the first right. Deciding which close relative is the most deserving and how much should be given to him is a matter left to the individual, who is in a better position to decide after considering all the factors in his surroundings.
