This delay might have other reasons. The prophet was looking forward to migrate then. And in madian the prophet got busy with the problems new problem. it was a traditional period. It might be the reason that he delayed her rukhsati.

Can’t it be that she was really 6 years old.
That why the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w waited.
Because we don’t observe a delay of years in his marriages to his 4,5th and so on wives
