Salam everyone. I was reading Surah Al-A’af 7:156, translated into English as “… God said, ‘I bring My punishment on whoever I will, but My mercy encompasses all things. ‘I shall ordain My mercy for those who are conscious of God and pay the prescribed alms; who believe in Our Revelations…’ “

I wanted to ask if this means that some people will remain in hell forever ie people who rejected the Quran ie Abu Lahab.

I’m also aware there are other verses which give a different perspective such as 11:107 which says:”there to remain for as long as the heavens and earth endure, unless your Lord wills otherwise: your Lord carries out whatever He wills.”

Overall, is Allah swt going to forgive everyone eventually or will some people be in hell for eternity?

Surah Hud verses 106-108, give the hint that the hell might not be eternal. It is God’s prerogative to keep it eternal or end it. However the rebels of God who committed the major sins and the arrogant, won’t enter into paradise as declared by God, 7:40۔

    They might be annihilated.

Could the saying in 7:40 that non-believers will burn in hell “until a camel passes the eye of the needle” mean forever or just a very long time?

      Read that verse carefully:

Surely those who receive Our revelations with denial and arrogance, the
gates of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter
      Paradise
until a camel passes through the eye of a needle.
      This is how
We reward the wicked. (Qur’an 7:40)

It is not about burning in Hell, it is about those who intentionally reject God arrogantly that will never enter Paradise. If Allah chooses to do something else besides Hell, He can do whatever He wants or place them any where He wants for how long He wants, but that place will never be Paradise is what 7:40 means.
