Extra Rules In Hadith Science Apart From Verifying The Chain Of Narration
Why do we set extra rules in Hadith science apart from verifying the chain of narration? Why do we have to add additional filters of moral acceptability, logic, and the Qur’an? Since we consider the people narrating it to be truthful, why don’t we accept everything or reject everything they say? If the chain of narration is sahih but goes against the Qur’an or accuses the Prophet or companions of something immoral, why reject it? May they they actually did it! I mean, I understand why from a theological perspective it’s important, but how do you explain this to a non-believer?

This is because Hadith is based on isolated reportings (Khabr-e-Wahid) which is a less credibles mode of transmission when compared with Quran which is received through Ijma and Tawatur (the most credible means). Just because a person is known to be truthful, there is still a possibility of a genuine misunderstadning on his part or a hidden political bias on his end etc. etc. The reason we have rigorous principles in place while approaching any Hadith is to make sure that these limitations in individual reportings could be minimized. But still, they could never be eliminated completely because despite these controls in place, certain inherent limitations embedded with this particular mode of transmission (i.e. Akhbar-i-ahad) could never be overcome. That is why we can never attain absolute assurance from Hadith; at best, after applying all the principles of understanding Hadith very carefully, we can attain only reasonable assurance.

The Quran reached us from a credible source, but the same cannot be said about Hadith. The argument regarding the transmission of the Quran and Hadith through generations is logical, but what about the content? From a non-believer’s perspective, how is it reasonable to assume that the Prophet or his companions could have not gone against the Quran or basic ethics/morals?

Quran, in additon to being the most credible book on religion, is also a source of established history from an academic standpoint. Therefore, the matters which are clearly established in Quran take precedence over individual reporting. Innocence and righteousness of Prophets is guaranteed by Quran, therefore any individual report which paints a picture otherwise will be rejected. As for the known companions of the Prophet (sws), mistakes can be committed by them, but no ill-will can be attributed to them because the Quran guarantees their piety.
