I know breaking promises is a major sin. But what about the commitments made by mistake?

For example, there is something I thought was a sin and committed before God to not do that again but now I realize it was not a sin but just an inappropriate thing and it takes away comfort to avoid it and even gets difficult sometimes. So, not only was it a mistake but the conditions changed as well

Another case is when I make a commitment or promise without taking into account the possible difficulties I might face and later on it turns out I should have not made that promise or commitment to a person or God.

I am trying to not make such commitments or promises that will cause difficulties. I don’t want to. But every now and then I do so without knowing the whole picture and at that moment it seems like not a big deal but later on I realize I should have not done that and I would have certainly not if I knew it would turn out to cause such difficulty.

What should I do in such cases? A lot of promises are technically gonna bring up difficulties that weren’t expected before making them.

Also, I am learning not to make such commitments. Now, I know I will be very careful before making promises but what about the ones I made without such care?

Take the example of an oath. Taking an oath is more serious a matter than a simple promise. Still, it is permissible to break the oath but atone for it by feeding 10 poor or keeping three consecutive fasting. So, if one feels some genuine need to break one’s promise, one can do it, but one should tell others who might be affected beforehand.

The promises made with God in ignorance can be revoked. God is Merciful. He did not demand you those ones.
