    Salam,

Individuals with mental health struggles like depression, or are on the neurodivergent spectrum, like autism (high functioning), can find fasting very difficult.

The emotional struggles intensify due to hunger and make it quite difficult to get through the fasting period. On top of that, the depressive symptoms intensifying can lead to increased struggle to get anything done and hyposomnia (excessive sleeping) for some people – leading to spending most of the fast stuck in bed or trying to drag yourself to pray – this adds to the guilt that you are not observing ramadan in the way that it should be (not spending it struggling to get basic prayers done).

We are aware that there is flexibility for physical health issues, but I can’t seem to find clarity regarding mental health issues.

Can I please get guidance on this? How should these individuals fast? How can they make the most of Ramadan? Is there any flexibility available for mental health issues?

    Thank you!
