Alot of people today have seen the many reports that ibn masud and ibn kaab, had different codices where they had different wording for the verses, how is this to be understood? like the saana palimpsest for example…

Differences in some old copies is possible, they wrote their notes on Qur’an, they write some words to explain some words of Qur’an, as we still have personal copies of scholars with their personal notes on Qur’an.

However, the copies they found belong to whom is not established and it can’t be.

Could the companions recite according to there understanding and dialect prior to the final reading?

The holy prophet initially didn’t grip minor changes during the recitation. But once it was finalised he made every effort to teach it his community who were living near him in madina and they learn it well, kept reciting before him and recorded in copies under his supervision. There left no room for any corruption because the whole community was guarding it the way we do, now.

If that was the case why didn’t all the early grammarians and famous reciters know there was this final reading?
