Attributing Something To The Prophet
Assalamualaikum
I came across this hadith :
لاَ تَكْذِبُوا عَلَىَّ، فَإِنَّهُ مَنْ كَذَبَ عَلَىَّ فَلْيَلِجِ النَّارَ
Do not tell a lie against me for whoever tells a lie against me (intentionally) then he will surely enter the Hell-fire.”
My question is, what if when you were narrating something you thought was from the Prophet but later found out that it wasn’t the case? Would this punishment still apply?

Punishment comes with evil intention and conscious sin. In this case it is not evil intention or a conscious sin.
