Revelation Context For Surah Anfal Verse 1
Salam!
I was reading a tafsir of Surah 8:1 by ibn kathir today and I was kinda surprised to see that there is a disagreement over what anfal really means? Like he quoted the interpretation of the word anfal (i.e some say it’s an extra reward thingy on top of the war booty, some say its maal-e-fay) by different sahaba and then he mentioned 2 revelation contexts in his tafsir:
– First one being something related to Sa’d ibn Waqas taking something from the war booty which was then assigned to the Prophet PBUH and then He pbuh gave it to Sa’d. It’s in Sahih Muslim too (https://sunnah.com/muslim:1748b)
– Second one resembling the more standard narrative.

I’m just curious about a few things now.
Why is the narrative of sahaba disputing and then Prophet PBUH collecting and distributing the entire war booty more popular?
Is it more authentic than the Sa’d ibn Waqas’ sword one?
Is this verse even about Prophet PBUH having authority over the entire war booty or is it about some sort of an extra reward Prophet PBUH had promised according to ANOTHER revelation context here: https://sunnah.com/abudawud:2740
And like is the usage of Anfal instead of Ghaneema (as it in Q8:41) mean something?
