  • Islamic Boundaries In Music Production. How Much Am I Responsible?

    Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah,

I’m a music producer, and as I grow in my understanding of Islam, I’ve been trying to align my creative work with my values. One thing I’m committed to is keeping my work clean—I don’t support vulgar, explicit, or openly haram content. I always let artists know this upfront when we start working together. That part is clear for me.

But the reality is more complicated, and I often find myself in uncomfortable grey areas. For example, even if a song we make together is clean, what if the artist later creates a music video that includes immodest scenes, cigarette use, or objectification of women? I had no role in that part, but my name is still attached to the project. Similarly, what if, after I’ve clearly asked the artist to avoid explicit lyrics, they still sneak in something inappropriate, or include themes that promote arrogance, flex culture, or heedlessness?

These situations make me question how far my responsibility goes. I don’t want to become too paranoid, but I also don’t want to be careless about something that could affect me spiritually.

On a more personal note, there’s also the human side to all this. It’s awkward sometimes to explain my boundaries, especially in a creative space where these things are considered normal. I often feel like the odd one out, and it’s not always easy to have those conversations without feeling like I’m being too strict or that I’m judging someone else. I’m not trying to impose anything—I just want to protect my own intentions and keep my work as clean as possible.

One more thing I’d like to mention is that, due to the ongoing debate around the permissibility of music itself, I’ve found very little practical and detailed guidance online for people like me who are already involved in this field but want to remain conscious of Islamic boundaries. I would deeply appreciate it if you could go deeper into this subject and share any other things you believe I should be cautious about—whether it’s related to lyrics, visuals, the people I collaborate with, or even the internal intentions behind the work.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan for your time and the wisdom you share. It means a lot to people like me who are trying to walk this path with sincerity.
