    Assalamu Alaikum

Maulana Isalhi writes under Baqara: 273 that it is not obligatory to give oneself exemption and eat the food (or say that God has peers) even in the case necessity drives the person and he doesn’t have any intention of committing the sin. Then he gives some examples of Sahaba. Ghamidi sahab seems to accept the same interpretation. The way he has explained that, the principle i deduce from that is that: when it comes to the matters regarding worship then giving oneself exemption is deemed to be better in the Shariah; but when it comes to haram matters, e.g. murder, eating swine flesh etc., then one may choose if that person really wants to give oneself exemption or not. Is this the true understanding?

Yes. Your understanding is right. Hazrat Ayesha reports that the prophet used to choose the easier way in the matters of worship. The principle of haram is different. There one may opt for not taking the concession.
