This question is for Maulana Ammar Khan Nasir.

    Assalamu Alaikum,

On May 4th, during the Ghamidi Live session, I had asked Ghamidi Sahib a question regarding income tax and Zakat. In his response, he advised me to contact you for further clarification and details.

I would now like to repeat the exact question I asked him:

“You (Ghamidi Sahib) have stated that if taxes have been paid to the government, then while calculating Zakat, that amount may be deducted from the Zakat due.

    My question is:

Do we find any example in our history where the amount paid as income tax was deducted while calculating Zakat?

And are there any other scholars besides yourself who also hold this view?”

I would be truly grateful if you could kindly respond.

Ammar saheb is not present on this forum.

You may take a comment from me.

The tax system as we see today is a later phenomenon. Previously it was only zakat and ushar which the Muslim governments used to charge. The essence of zakat and tax is the same in the term that the governments collect them to generate revenue. Thefore taxes are suggested to be counted as zakat paid by some scholars.
