Donation To Charities And Trusts Which May Offer Some Return
Hello,
I occasionally donate to charities and trusts that may offer some potential benefit through ballots or draws. Some of these schemes may even be branded as lotteries. For example, one such service spends all profits (not revenue) on cancer research. Every $10 donation counts towards an entry to a draw at the end of the month where people may win something big like a car or something small like a 2-day paid vacation to a nice location or nothing at all.
I diversify my donations, meaning I donate in various ways to various charities/people/trusts and not just to the causes which use some form of prize or gift to incite donations. However, my first intention (niyyah) for this one towards cancer was “to try my luck otherwise no harm because it’s going for a good cause”.
Is it permissible? Especially if I won something, given that my intention includes possibly getting lucky and winning something. Or is it one of those gray areas where personal ijtihad also holds some worth?
Thanks
