Salam, I recently came across two videos (translated using AI) of Turkish Islamic scholar Prof. Dr. Yaşar Nuri Öztürk. According to one, the prophet (peace be upon him) forbade writing hadith and as per his 2nd video Hazrat Umar also forbade to write hadith and Ummayyad promoted hadith to change islam.

It has been discussed in detail by Ghamidi saheb in his series on Hadith Kia hai.
In short, it was initially forbidden they allowed. It was circumstantial.
Umar bin Abdul aziz the ummayd Caliph ordered to compile the hadith of the prophet.
It was not possible to change religion through fabricated hadith. Moreover the ummayds were true Muslims who served Islam a lot.
