  • To Make Up For Isha Prayers If Menses End At Fajr

Posted by Saba Bilal on September 7, 2025 at 10:45 am

If u sleep at night around 10 and u are still menstruating and then wake up at fajr and find that u must now bath and pray, will u have to make up for isha as well? I’m asking because theoretically they could’ve ended during the time of isha while one of sleeping. Or is it more prudent to wake up much before fajr to check if one is pure and pray isha if need be ? But that would just mean have to keep awake and keep checking. Also is it better to pray zuhr as well if one becomes pure at asr timing ( like combining the two prayers ) since a lot of scholars believe a menstruating women is like a traveller and should pray combined prayers if she becomes pure at a later prayer ( like asr and isha)?

There is no such ruling. We are only responsible for our actions as long as we are awake. When we are asleep, we are not responsible for such matters. If in the normal course of action, a female who is not suited for Salah sleeps at night, then she is not required to offer Salah at fajr time if her status changes while asleep. In such instances, she will be considered exempt, just the way she was while being awake.

Ok, so even if I wake up a minute after fajr and there is high likelihood that menses had stopped during isha timing then it’s still not incumbent upon me to make up isha prayers? Just to be clear. But sometimes u nap in the middle of the day and a similar situation arises with another prayer, I do usually make up that prayer just in case (ex- napped at asr to wake up at Maghrib so I make up asr too if I can pray now). I personally find the situation a little different because u don’t usually nap during the day and u do sleep at night so I feel like isha prayer can be seen to be excused ? Also should combine prayers ( if I can in case of asr and isha) after becoming pure?

This exemption is granted by the Prophet (SWS), so accept this relaxation and don’t bother about minute details. When you’re asleep, you are not responsible for the changed state during that time and the exemption applies equally.

The principle is EASE in matters of Ibadah, as Quran says:

      يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ

God desires ease for you and does not want to be harsh with you. (Excerpt from 2:185)

But by that logic i shouldn’t be obsessively checking for any prayer . I should check at the time of prayer and a reasonable time before prayer ends( like 30-40minutes?) but if I don’t see purity during those times, then I should directly check for the next prayer and only pray that Salah ( not qaza for the last one because I was previously assuming that I had no real proof that purity had not occurred even a minute before the prayer ended so I should pray the last prayer too). This seems hyper specific I know but I’m sure the answers will be helpful for other women aswell!

      This seems reasonable.

If a lady’s period starts after the time for prayer has started ( zuhr for example), but she has not yet prayed before she realized that she cannot pray anymore than she should make up for that prayer as soon as she is pure and has the opportunity to do so right ?

Please tell me what do you think in the light of the principle we’d discussed above.

I don’t think the principle would apply though… since the namaz became farz on you when the time arrived, and since the assumption would be that u were pure from until the moment u sure impurity ( the same way in the previous example we assumed impurity until we saw purity ) so u should ideally make up the prayer as soon as u can ( when your menses subside and u are pure). Might be different in the case when impurity starts immediately after the time of Salah starts since realistically there wouldn’t be time to pray but if there was time to pray even 2-4 Rakats then wouldn’t the Salah be your responsibility to make up ? Am I incorrect?
