Zakat On Salary
I seek clarification regarding the difference between government taxation and zakat on salaries. The government applies different tax rates based on income levels. For instance, if a person’s annual income is between Rs. 600,000 and Rs. 1,200,000, a tax of 1% is applied on the amount exceeding Rs. 600,000. This means that a person earning Rs. 80,000 per month pays approximately Rs. 300 in tax.
According to Ustaz Javed Ahmad Ghamidi, if the government fixes a nisab for salaries, then a person should pay 10% zakat on that income. Consequently, someone earning Rs. 80,000 per month would pay Rs. 8,000 as zakat each month, which amounts to Rs. 96,000 annually.
My concern is that if a person already finds it difficult to meet their essential living expenses—such as rent, family needs, and daily costs—how would it be fair or practical for them to pay such a significant amount as zakat? How does Islamic teaching address this situation of financial hardship?
