Also please explain all types of Tazkiyah in detail, like: (1) food (halal-haram), (2) body cleanliness & purity, (3) ibadah, and (4) akhlaq (character). And why is akhlaq considered the most important/top priority among them?

Meaning of Tazkiyah (Purification)Tazkiyah in Islam means both purifying and nurturing growth of the soul. It is not limited to avoiding sins; rather, it is the process of removing inner corruption—like arrogance, greed, hatred, and dishonesty—while allowing virtues such as humility, patience, sincerity, and justice to grow. Because the Qur’an repeatedly links success to the purification of the soul, Tazkiyah is considered one of the central objectives of religion. Without it, religious practice risks becoming mechanical, and knowledge risks becoming pride.
Why Tazkiyah is a Core Objective of ReligionIslam does not aim to produce people who merely follow rules; it aims to transform human beings internally. The mission of the Prophet ﷺ included purifying people, which shows that belief and worship are meant to reshape character and consciousness. Tazkiyah bridges belief, worship, and daily conduct, ensuring that faith translates into moral responsibility and emotional balance. This inner refinement is what ultimately prepares a person for Jannat-ul-Firdaus.
Tazkiyah of Food and Earnings (Halal–Haram)This form of Tazkiyah focuses on consuming lawful food and earning honestly. What enters the body influences the heart; haram income hardens the soul and dulls moral sensitivity. However, halal food alone does not make a person righteous—it only prepares the ground. True purification still requires ethical conduct and inner discipline.
Tazkiyah of the Body (Cleanliness and Purity)Physical cleanliness—through wudu, ghusl, and maintaining clean surroundings—builds discipline and mindfulness. These acts are not ends in themselves; they train awareness and readiness for worship. External purity supports inner order, reminding a person to pause, reset, and approach acts of devotion consciously.
Tazkiyah through Ibadah (Worship)Prayer, fasting, zakah, and Qur’an recitation are tools for purification. Their purpose is to restrain wrongdoing, humble the ego, and cultivate patience and self-control. When worship does not improve behavior or soften the heart, Tazkiyah is not taking place. Conscious, meaningful worship—not merely frequent rituals—is what refines the soul.
Tazkiyah of Akhlaq (Character) — the Highest PriorityAkhlaq is the peak of Tazkiyah because it reflects the true state of the soul. Islam places the greatest weight on honesty, humility, justice, mercy, patience, and controlling anger. A person may eat halal, pray regularly, and fast—but if they harm others or act unjustly, the moral aim of religion is lost. This is why character is the strongest indicator of purification and the heaviest factor in accountability.
How to Practically Achieve TazkiyahTazkiyah is gradual and lifelong. It involves self-accountability, regulating impulses rather than suppressing emotions, practicing worship with understanding, correcting one’s conduct with people, and accepting steady growth instead of seeking instant perfection. Islam does not demand flawlessness; it demands sincerity and consistent effort.
Tazkiyah and Jannat-ul-FirdausJannat-ul-Firdaus is attained not by rituals alone, but by a refined soul. The Qur’an emphasizes a sound heart—one shaped by humility, justice, and God-consciousness. Tazkiyah aligns belief, worship, and character so that a person’s inner state matches the moral purpose of faith.

This is a comprehensive topic. Please review the following discussions, where different aspects of Tazkiya are examined and connected to the essence of religion. Worship is the core reality of religion; when worship is performed in this world in accordance with the Lord’s commands, it helps us attain tazkiya here, which in turn leads to success in the Hereafter.

The Sharia provides the framework for achieving this tazkiya.

    Domains of Tazkiya

    – Tazkiya of food: Eating tayyibaat and avoiding khabaees; consuming halal zabeeha after properly draining the blood etc.

    – Tazkiya of the body: Personal hygiene and grooming such as cleaning the mouth and nose, trimming a long moustache, removing hair under the armpits and pubic hair, circumcision, performing wudu, and ghusl.

    – Tazkiya of the soul and ethics: Moral conduct- being honest and just, humble rather than arrogant, and cultivating virtuous character.

Ethics (tazkiya of the soul) is given the highest priority because it not only shapes our inner life and personality but also influences the other domains of tazkiya. For example, arrogance makes a person more likely to violate the rules governing other domains. Ethics is central to human character and affects all our decisions.

      Tazkiya has two dimensions:

      i) removal of impurity/achieving purity

      ii) nourishing the purity further

Ibadah in the form of Namaz helps us achieve both of these points. It helps us not only stay pure spiritually, but also helps flourish that purity further.
