  • Entering Into Priza Draw Where Net Proceeds After Prize Costs Are Donated

There is this new charity in UK that asks people to enter into a prize draw for luxury homes etc. For their prize draws, 80% of “net proceeds” (ie proceeds after the deduction of the cost of prizes and marketing) is given to the nominated charity.

They recognzie charities cant do this (buy homes and then sell etc) and people dont really donate as much as charities would like. So this is the “gap” in the market they are going for.

Now as a muslim are we allowed to donate into such prize draws or would it count towards gambling? As you are basically going there for the prize draw because if you wanted to donate to the charity you could just go and donate for those causes directly – as all the charities this company donates the 80% net proceeds to are registered charities (Alzheimer’s society, Great Ormond street hospital etc)

This is gambling, a portion of which is used for charity, but it does not make it halal.

That’s what my thinking was as well.

Thank you for confirming it and for taking the time to answer.

    JazakAllah
