  • Is Wearing Pants Below The Ankles Haram?

    Assalamu alaikum,

I’m trying to understand the ruling on isbal (a man letting his lower garment or pants go below the ankles). Here are the main hadiths I found:

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The part of an Izar which hangs below the ankles is in the Fire.”

    — Sahih al-Bukhari 5787

Narrated Abu Hurairah: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever drags his lower garment out of pride/conceit, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.”

    — Sahih al-Bukhari (Book of Dress) & Sahih Muslim (e.g., 106a–108c)

Narrated Jabir bin Sulaym (or similar): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Beware of lowering your garment (below the ankles), for verily it is from arrogance/conceit (makhila), and Allah does not like arrogance.”

    — Sunan Abi Dawud 4084 (graded sahih)

Narrated Abu Bakr: “One side of my Izar slips down unless I take care of it.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said: “You are not one of those who do it out of pride/arrogance.”

    — Sahih al-Bukhari 5784

Narrated Abu Sa’id al-Khudri: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “…whatever is lower than the ankles is in Hell. Whoever trails his Izar out of conceit, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection.”

    — Sunan Abi Dawud 4093 (graded sahih)

And another hadith saying that a companion told another companion to lift his pants up and on another hadith asked if he had menses( meaning are u a woman) because his garment was below his ankle

    So my question is:

Based on these hadiths, is letting the garment/pants go below the ankles haram for men in all cases (even if there is no pride, arrogance, or showing off), or is it only haram when done out of pride/arrogance and some people say without pride the part of the place will be in hell and if with pride Allah will not look at him. Please answer my questions as it gives me a lot of doubt

JazakAllah khair for your time and clarification

    Wa Alaikum Assalam,
These hadiths should be understood in their proper context, meaning in the time of the Prophet ﷺ. In the pre-Islamic period, the Quraysh used to drag their garments on the ground while walking, and this was considered a sign of pride and arrogance. Therefore, the Prophet ﷺ gave stern warnings regarding this matter.
Arrogance is a moral evil, and in the Qur’an one of the purposes of the Prophet’s mission is mentioned as tazkiyah, meaning purification. So whenever the Prophet ﷺ saw a moral corruption in his society, he warned against it and prohibited it. There were also certain specific matters that were related particularly to that time.
The Prophet ﷺ himself defined arrogance in a hadith, which is narrated with a sound chain of transmission. Abdullah ibn Mas’ud رضي الله عنه reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever has even the weight of a mustard seed of arrogance in his heart will not enter Paradise.” A man asked: “What if a person likes to wear good clothes and have nice shoes? Is that arrogance?” The Prophet ﷺ replied: “Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty. Arrogance is to reject the truth and look down on people.” This hadith is recorded in Sahih Muslim, hadith number 91.
Thus, arrogance is what has been defined in this hadith. Anything that is lawful in itself, but becomes a means of producing arrogance within a person, then that becomes sinful. This helps us understand that the warnings about dragging garments were not about the clothing itself, but about the pride and arrogance it represented at that time.
