From Seerah of Ibn Ishaq (via Ibn Hisham)
When Quraysh faced a severe famine, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to his uncle Abu Talib:“Your brother Abu Talib has many dependents. Let us lighten his burden.”
So al-‘Abbas took one of his sons, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took Ali ibn Abi Talib, and he remained with him. The Prophet ﷺ was living with: Khadijah bint KhuwaylidAli was in the same household.

Does this fact alone not qualify Ali to be included in Ahl al-Bayt?

There is no doubt that Ali was the Prophet’s family. He was his son-in-law, too. Ahl e Bait means family, family essentially includes wives and then other family members too.

But Irfan sahab, is it not true that in Ghamidi sahab’s fikr he is emphasizing that the Ahl-e-Bayt can only refer to the wives of the Prophet? Or have I understood it wrong?

He particularly refers to the verse in surah Ahzab. It specifies the wives only.
