Question: Interpretation of the Story of the People of Lut (Homosexuality vs Rape/Injustice)
In the Qur’an, the story of the people of Lut is mentioned in several places, for example:
- Surah Al-A‘raf (7:80–81): “Do you commit immorality such as none before you has committed? You approach men with desire instead of women…”
- Surah An-Naml (27:54–55) and Surah Al-‘Ankabut (29:28–29): which also mention their “immoral deed” and rejection of Lut’s warning.
The traditional interpretation understands these verses as referring to homosexual acts, while many modern scholars and some alternative interpretations argue that the main issue was actually forced sexual violence, rape of guests, corruption, and violation of hospitality and justice rather than consensual same-sex relationships.
How do classical and contemporary Islamic scholars reconcile these different understandings, and what is the strongest evidence used to support either interpretation?
And as a homosexual, what should I do? Because I don’t have any feeling for girls should I stay single for my whole life or should I forcefully marry a girl?
