Question: Interpretation of the Story of the People of Lut (Homosexuality vs Rape/Injustice)

In the Qur’an, the story of the people of Lut is mentioned in several places, for example:

    • Surah Al-A‘raf (7:80–81): “Do you commit immorality such as none before you has committed? You approach men with desire instead of women…”
    • Surah An-Naml (27:54–55) and Surah Al-‘Ankabut (29:28–29): which also mention their “immoral deed” and rejection of Lut’s warning.

The traditional interpretation understands these verses as referring to homosexual acts, while many modern scholars and some alternative interpretations argue that the main issue was actually forced sexual violence, rape of guests, corruption, and violation of hospitality and justice rather than consensual same-sex relationships.

How do classical and contemporary Islamic scholars reconcile these different understandings, and what is the strongest evidence used to support either interpretation?

And as a homosexual, what should I do? Because I don’t have any feeling for girls should I stay single for my whole life or should I forcefully marry a girl?

Brother read the verses yourself. And being emotionally dry and with 100% intellectual honesty, see if it’s warning against merely non-consensual sex regardless of gender or if it is highlighting the evil of choosing men over women for desire.

    May Allah guide us all.

Read yourself, research yourself and ask Allah for interpretation. Most scholars are I think human beings, prone to worldly deceptions. However if you reach by your own honest research a deceptive result. Allah knows the heart, he will know if you had done enough from your side or not but never think that on that day when you stand before Allah and you will be asked why you did so and so and that it will suffice if you respond that others told me to do thus.

Understand the need for marriage. Why couldn’t we just stay single and fulfill our desires with whatsoever male, female or animal without any commitment. We can do whatever we want to. This is realizing that no one is my Lord to instruct me how to or what to. The. We say I will whatever I will unless there is an instruction from Allah. And the reason for that instruction is not my concern, my concern is to acknowledge it for the sake of my eternal life. May Allah develop in your heart lovely inclination for what he has allowed and for what he has instructed you
