  • The Sun Setting In A Muddy Spring Quran 18:86

In Quran 18:86, it says: “Until, when he reached the setting of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of murky water…” If the Quran is intended to be a timeless and scientifically accurate revelation, why does this verse describe the sun in a way that appears consistent with an ancient Earth-based observation, where the sun seems to descend into a local body of water? Since modern astronomy shows that the sun is a massive star far larger than Earth and does not literally set into anything, how should this verse be understood, and why wasn’t a clearer description used if the intent was not to convey a literal setting place for the sun?

It is about the description of the observation of Zulqurnain. He saw the sun setting in a muddy spring, as we see it setting in the sea or behind a mountain.

The Quran is not a book of science. It used the language of literature, where “The Sun sets in the west” is valid, despite scientific knowledge.
