Al-Mujadila – 58:16
Arabic
ٱتَّخَذُوٓاْ أَيۡمَٰنَهُمۡ جُنَّةً فَصَدُّواْ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ فَلَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ
English – Sahih International
They took their [false] oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allah, and for them is a humiliating punishment.
English – Pickthall
They make a shelter of their oaths and turn (men) from the way of Allah; so theirs will be a shameful doom.
English – Yusuf Ali
They have made their oaths a screen (for their misdeeds): thus they obstruct (men) from the Path of Allah: therefore shall they have a humiliating Penalty.
JAG:
They use their oaths as a shield. Thus they have desisted from the path of God. So a humiliating torment awaits them. (14-16)
Does صدوا mean to obstruct others from the path of God or to desist from it yourself?

صدوا is used both as transitive and intransitive verb. The context and the construction of the sentence determines whether it will be taken as transitive or intransitive. Translators may differ. One may decide on the basis of his or her knowledge and understanding of language.
