Quran 4:154 – Raising Of The Mount
The following is the footnote of 4:154
Was the covenant a physical thing that was raised? Is it referring to the tablets with the Ten Commandments or the ark of the covenant box?
4. It is evident from the Qur’an and the Bible that this covenant was taken from the Israelites in the valley of Ṭur where the mountain was extracted from its place and made to hang aloft on their heads like a roof, and it seemed to them that it would fall on them. It is this situation which the Qur’an has termed as raising Ṭur over them. The Qur’anic words which state this are: وَ رَفَعۡنَا فَوۡقَہُمُ الطُّوۡرَ بِمِیۡثَاقِہِمۡ. The letter ب is for mulabasah. Its purpose, in the words of Imam Amin Ahsan Islahi, is to portray the fact that the Lord Almighty raised aloft mount Ṭur over them as well as the covenant to show the covenant and mount Ṭur; if the covenant was violated, their heads would be crushed by that very mountain.
