it is just a literary tool, however, at the second place, the use of Idhaa made the oaths the oaths for present, even though the use of Idh too would have not affected the present sense coming from a past tense.

  So the first is ‘when the night receded’ and the second is ‘as the day brightens’. So the first is referring to dawn and then second refers to the climb of the sun

  Nouman Ali Khan says it like ‘when the night departed’ ‘and the day finally comes’
