In Al-Bayan the last part of verse 2:49 has been translated as:

“…Aur (tumhen) is (azaab se churhaanay) me tumhare parwardigar ki taraf se (tumhare liye) bari inayat thi”

However, in all major English translations (https://quran.com/2/49) this has been translated as:

“…this was a great trial from your Lord”

Why has ‘balaa’ (trial) been translated as Inayat?

The Context of the verse probably caused Ghamidi sab to focus on the consequence of the Trial and the subsequent mercy from God than the trial itself. There was a lesson to be learnt from the particular incident mentioned in this verse. Ghamidi sab often explains that sometimes a word is translated verbatim and sometimes its translated as per its “Misdaaq”.

The full verse is translated as:

Its obvious that it was a great punishment on Bani Israeel from Firoon and Allah talla lifted that Trial through Moosa(as).

Somewhat similar verse has been repeated in Surah Araf (7:141) where Ghamidi Sahab has explained the meaning of ‘Balaa’.
