  How is it permissible according to the Quran? It seems like prostitution to me.

  There’s no such permission of Mutah in Quran. Quran is very clear that intimate relationships are to be held with wife only (Quran 23: 5-6, Quran 70: 29-30). And as a principle, Hadith can neither add nor abrogate anything from Quran.
