Why Lowering The Gaze Should Not Be Taken Literally?
I have seen a number of videos where Javed Ghamidi explains the etiquettes for male-female social interactions. He always emphasizes that the phrase, “lower your gaze” does not literally mean to look away from the opposite sex, but to add purity to this gaze. Can someone share some reasons with me as to why the phrase should be interpreted in this light? I can think of a few reasons, but would like to see another perspective. JazakAllah!

It is the knowledge of language and its idioms as used by the people of a language that one understands from a text that it is is used in a literal sense of a metaphorically or figuratively. To lower one’s gaze does not mean to lower your eyelids all the time to avoid gazing at Na Mehram. it actually means to avoid gazing at Na Mehram. this is the purpose of the injunction. To fulfill this command, one may at time lower one’s gaze or divert it avoid gazing at a Na Mehram.

JazakAllah Dr. Irfan Shahzad for your answer! However, is there also information in the Qur’an itself that lends evidence to the phrase not being taken literally? For instance, in associated verses to the verse on “lowering the gaze”. Or, perhaps other passages or ahadith? Anything other than the functioning of Classical Arabic language itself? JazakAllah.

What about when looking for a potential spouse?

Wherever this phrase is used in language or Ahadith it is used the says way.
However in a hadith it is reported that a young companion of the prophet was staring at a beautiful woman when she was asking some question to the prophet, the prophet tuned his face away.
