A Muslim should refrain from participating in any polytheistic activity and we should nicely excuse ourselves from anything that involves polytheism.

this is becoming an issue in muslims living abroad. More and more muslims have non-muslims friends and since most other faith have secularized a lot, they invite their muslims friends to weddings, birthdays etc

the issue is not an islamic issue but personal. Being part of shirk is not allowed, drinking alcohol, eating pork is not allowed etc etc. We all know that.

if you can avoid the shirk part of the ceremony then do not attend, or if u can tell your friend that you can come but would stand outside or something during the ritual then you should attend. This is your decision. Personally, I would attend but not participate in the ceremony if its polytheistic in nature.

You can participate in marriage festivities of your Hindu friends, except for the part where polytheistic rituals are being conducted.

So we can attend marriage or ring ceremony function of hindu friend but when they are doing something like shirk we should not go near that…we can attend marriage or ring ceremony as a whole but should not go near place where they are performing polytheistic rituals..just staying away from place where polytheistic act is performed is fine by hanging around food corners…I don’t have to fully dodge marriage ceremony …is my understanding correct?

You should avoid the polytheistic part only and can participate in the rest of the ceremony.
