Film Making In Islam
Assalamu Alaikum …
Dear Javed Ghamdhi Sir , I am Md Muntasir from Kolkata ( India) , I have been following you since long . Sir , I am studying to be a scriptwriter & Director & already worked a little in Kolkata Film Industry . Being a practicing Muslim , InshAllah will not write scenes of intimate nature, or even where men and women need to touch . I want to direct & write about social issues , real world stories with Islamic values & Islamic stories ( to counter Islamophobia ) without songs . However if a production company buys my script & as a writer if , I lose control over presentation or characters dress . So , my questions in that scenario
1. Am I accountable for it ? Or simply , is Film Making / Script writing haram ?
2. Can I work in Bollywood / Hollywood movie / tv as Assistant director or script writer or director or in any technical job so , I can get experience & then I can make movies with Islamic values
3. Being a practicing Muslim , Should I give up this choice of career ( scriptwriting / direction ). But if Muslims do not get involved in the Film/Tv industry which is non-Islamic ( & almost all Muslims are watching these movies ) then , how do we change it ?
4. I feel , story naturally comes to my mind & Alhamdulillah I am good at imagination & explanation . So , I want to write script , specially about our stories ( Muslim’s stories ) . If , scriptwriting or Film making haram , ( Having these skills ) what profession should I pursue ( except novel writing ) .
5. Please sir , give us details information about film making in Islam . if possible make a video . Which part is allowed & which is not & how can we make Islamic Film or tv industry like Islamic banking . Because sir , like Banking , In 21 century we can’t ignore how it’s important to survive or to spread Islamic values in our society & non muslim society also .
Sir , I think OTT is widening the opportunity to make Islamic Film/ Tv industry .

For matters/activities including film making/script writing which are not haram in their absolute sense, the only thing we Muslims should look for are the ethical issues surrounding such an activity, if any, in accordance with Quran Surah Araf (7:33):
قُلْ إِنَّـمَا حَرَّمَ رَبِّيَ الْفَوَاحِشَ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَمَا بَطَنَ وَالإِثْمَ وَالْبَغْيَ بِغَيْرِ الْـحَقِّ وَأَن تُشْرِكُوْا بِاللّهِ مَا لَـمْ يُنَزِّلْ بِهِ سُلْطَانًا وَأَن تَقُولُوْا عَلَى اللّهِ مَا لاَ تَعْلَمُوْنَ.
Tell [them]: “My Lord has only forbidden all lewd acts, whether overt or hidden and usurping the rights of others and wrongful oppression and that you worship with Him what He did not sanction and that you fabricate something about God what you know not.” (Quran 7:33)
If one can refrain from the above mentioned ethical issues in film making / script writing, the there’s no reason to not engage in these activities.
