I have read that impurities (e.g., menstrual blood) must be cleaned in Islam, and coming into contact with them requires a new Wudhu. Here is my conundrum: when I was a teenager I did not know about this and would sometimes have my menstrual blood leak onto a sofa. I did my best to clean it, but I know there are likely smaller streaks on the sofa I may have missed.

How do I clean this sofa? I feel especially bad because my parents read the Quran on this sofa sometimes. What is the evidence for this impurity rule? How can I fix this situation?

We are obliged to do things apparently, cannot go for minute details at molecular level. There is no hardship in religion. we do things in normal way. if we go for such minute details there is nothing pure or clean.

      Asalamualaikum Dr. Irfan Shahzad,

I’m just curious if there’s a standard we should follow in determining something to be impure. For example, if a garment is moist/slightly wet because of an impurity and it comes into contact with furniture or the floor, does this impurity transfer? Or does the impurity only transfer if we can physically see something?

Similarly, if I am changing a baby’s diaper and happen to get feces or urine on my hand, I will wash my hands in the sink. But sometimes water will splash back – is this water pure? Or if I gargle water in my mouth to remove any blood that is there, is the water that hits the sink and splashes back on me impure? Do I need to change my clothes? I’m just confused about this.

On a side note, I thought that merely touching an impurity does not invalidate your wudu?

      JazakAllah
