Mistake In Quran Regarding Seven Heavens
Assalam-o-Alekum,
In Quran we see a mention of seven heavens in various verses.
71:15 “See ye not how Allah has created the seven heavens, one above another,”
71:16 “And made the moon a light in their midst, and made the sun as a (Glorious) lamp?” [translation: Yusuf Ali]
37:6 “We have indeed decked the lowest heaven with an adornment, the stars.”
The commentators in history have given the following accounts to explain them:
A. Seven is not the literal number but denotes a huge, infinite or a large number.
B. Seven levels of Paradise 1. Jannat-al-Firdaus, 2. Jannat al Adan, 3. Jannat-ul-Mawa, 4. Jannat-an-Naim, 5. Dar al-maqama, 6. Dar al-salam, and 7. Dar al-Akhirah.
C. Seven layers of the Earth’s atmosphere 1. Troposphere, 2. Stratosphere, 3. Mesosphere, 4. Thermosphere, 5. Ionosphere, 6. Exosphere, 7. Magnetosphere
D. Seven Planets/Bodies that were visible to naked eye at the time of Prophet. 1. Sun, 2. Moon, 3. Mercury, 4. Venus, 5. Mars, 6. Jupiter and 7. Saturn.
A, B, C explanations are false because in verse 71:15 it says, ‘See ye not’ denoting it’s talking about something that people can see.
Now we’re left only with the explanation D. But now another problem comes, which is Quran 37.6 which mentions stars in the lowest heaven. How can we have Planets above the stars? If stars are indeed in the lowest heaven, and all the heaven we can see, this simply means all A, B, C, D explanations are wrong according to our latest Scientific Understanding.
This scientific confusion can only be resolved by resorting to view of Thalmud in which the sky is a literal canopy, earth is a literal flat surface, stars literally below Sun, Moon and other planets. The following the picture that Thalmud and ancient astronomy believed in.
Does this means that whoever wrote the Quran didn’t know that space doesn’t need pillars, earth’s not flat, sun and moon don’t move but earth does or that the seven heavens as seven planets the furthest reaches of the universe, as referred by ancient religions was false and unscientific?

Quran used idiomatic expressions, not scientific ones, therefore no scientific objection is applicable to Quran. We still do not know the limit of the lowest sky. we see starts in it and also planets are there as the modern science tells. Quran has nothing to do with the specific details. it only tells what was observable to a common man to make him realise certain other facts that since God has created all these things, so He is one and He is going to make you accountable for your deeds.
