3 times is the maximum number so that one should not indulge in wasting water for Wuzu/Ghusal.

Rinsing mouth is not mandatory but it is done to achieve completion in purity and is in accordance with uswa of the prophet (sws).

Please refer to the following responses of Ghamidi Sahab for details:

      Asalamualaikum Mr. Umer Qureshi,

I’m just a little bit confused about this. It makes sense to me that there is a maximum number set for wudu because it is very much a ritualistic and orderly process. We have to follow a certain order in order to specifically prepare ourselves for prayer.

On the other hand, if ghusl is just a normal shower, why does there need to be any kind of limit set on rinsing the mouth. Because for example, we are washing our body parts that are exposed to the shower head many more times than the regular three times. A person will tend to rub their body parts many times, just because of how spontaneous a shower is, unlike wudu. And in a regular shower, a person may choose to brush their teeth as well, which requires gargling. But then, it doesn’t make sense if they are not able to do that because they have already gargled three times.

Please can you give some advice.

      JazakAllah

It is the same limit for Wuzu applied to Ghusal, when one chooses to perform Wuzu first in accordance with Uswa of the Prophet, before Ghusal. This doesn’t put any limit during the shower.

Okay, this makes sense. So, if we choose to do Wuzu during Ghusl, we can only rinse the mouth up to three times. However, for the remainder of Ghusal, we are allowed to rinse the mouth however many times we like? And same with the nose?

On a side note, what does Uswa mean?

      JazakAllah

Yes, that is correct and same is for the nose.

Uswa refer to the way Prophet Muhammad (sws) followed directives of religion i.e. wuzu, ghusal etc. which are transmitted to us through Ahadith.
