Woman Is Awrah
Posted by Mumin Ahmad on March 1, 2022 at 9:39 amOften it is said that woman is awrah based on some ahadith. What’s the status of those ahadith? And won’t it contradict Ghamidi Sahab’s understanding of pardah?

By principle, if such matter is discussed in the Quran, the principle stance will be taken from Quran. Awrah means to hide, but we see that Quran never asks Muslims to keep their women hidden, rather in Suran Nur verse 30 and 31 it tells the manners while interacting and facing men and women. However, Awrah means to hide body parts, then it is considerable, as Quran says to cover and guard your private parts and if adornment is done, then cover it too before men, except for what usually stays bare, like hands, face.

I was talking about this Hadith;
Abu Dawud reported from Umm Salamah that she asked the Prophet about a woman who prayed wearing a dir’ (chemise or upper garment) and a khimaar (head cover), but no izaar (lower garment). He said: “The woman is ‘awrah.”
I know this is about what women should wear while praying, but can we say the same about the statement that ” the woman is awrah” ? It seems to me that the last statement is kind of a general one, as if the hadith meant to say that women should wear these clothes because she is (always) an awrah, since saying that woman is awrah inside the prayer but not outside of it doesn’t seem to be a very logical explanation of this hadith
Thank you

Scholar March 7, 2022 at 12:48 amWe know that woman is supposed to be more covered than man. this indicates that since women needs to be covered so she should cover her lower part too during the prayer too.

Member March 12, 2022 at 6:06 amYes sir, but from the wording it seems like Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) is saying the woman is awrah as a general statement (and that’s why she should cover herself while praying) . There’s nothing in this Hadith that shows that this statement was intended for only prayers and not outside prayers

Scholar March 14, 2022 at 2:32 amIf that means that the woman must be hidden then it actually never happened. So it is obviously means that her body needs to be covered and that is more than man’s .
