US Family had some good amount of savings, on which zakat is been paid each year.

But, one of the family member fell ill last year and stopped working. Instead, added medical bills that are gobbling up the said savings.

The current family income ($25k) for last year, is below federal poverty line, while savings is ($10k). While the minimum yearly expense (estimated) will be 30k. The whole $10k are now set aside as upcoming medical cost. Unless the family income increases, there will be $5K deficit.
Now should the family pay $2.5k (Ushr)? The zakat calculator did not consider the expense.

If the family is below nisab then there’s no zakat due upon them. The Zakat Calculator specifically shows what is Nisab for assets / savings as well production / earnings and only calculates zakat if the user selects that they’re above nisab in either or both categories.
