  • Different School Of Thoughts As To When Does Isha Time End

Posted by Nadeem Minhas on June 16, 2022 at 6:13 pm

There are two schools of thought. One says Isha time is until Fajar. The other, including Ghamidi Sahib, say that Isha time is until mid night.

If Isha time is until midnight…

    1. How is midnight defined in Islam; especially when there were no clocks in olden times. Wouldn’t midnight change by the length of the day and night?

    2. If Isha time is until midnight, why Witars are allowed with Isha prayer, but preferably before Fajar prayer?

Maybe Dr. Irfan Shahzad Sahab ( @Irfan76 ) can shed some light on this matter.

For the second question regarding Witr, I think Ghamidi suggests witr to be another name for Tahajjud. So, its better to pray before fajr. Please refer to the video :

Well, Ghamidi sahib says, that name of the prayers are the names of the times. So we need to know through language what time these refers. Isha, refers to first half early part of the night, not the whole night. So the matter is decided here. Now we have a verse which mentions it is the early part of night.

      وَ اَقِمِ الصَّلٰوۃَ طَرَفَیِ النَّہَارِ وَ زُلَفًا مِّنَ الَّیۡلِ

And Listen! [O Prophet! To remain steadfast in this path,] be diligent in the prayer in both parts of the day and in the early part of the night also (11:114)

Thanks for the answer. There are still some items to consider or remain to be answered.

    1. How in olden times midnight was determined?

    2. Did the prayer names come first or the prayer names were named after the words in Arabic language that already existed.

    3. What is the argument of those scholars who say Isha time is until start of fajar. How is their argument weaker?

    1. It was there guess of course.

    2. When God revealed prayers, He named them after the name of the times to let people learn their timings.

    3. This needs study.
