  • Quran 65:4 – Girls Who Have Not Menstruated Despite Reaching The Age

Those of your women, who have ceased menstruating and they also who have not menstruated [in spite of reaching its age],[13] if you have any doubt about them, their waiting period is three months.[14] And the waiting period of pregnant women is until they deliver the child. [These are the directives of God; follow them,] and [remember that] he who fears God, He will create ease for him in his matters.[15]This is the directive of God which He has revealed to you. And He who fears God, God will brush away his sins from him and will increase the reward [of his virtues].
I have read Ghamidi Sb’s tafsir and he mentions that this verse mentions those girls who have not had their menstruation cycles despite reaching the age of puberty. But in today’s world we know about this condition as Amenorrhea (not menstruating despite reaching the age) and we also know that it is quite rare, around less than 0.1 percent just in the US.
So how do we know that this verse is talking about what you can consider as exceptional cases and not about the large number of girls who haven’t menstruated yet?

In normal circumstances, the iddat is three menstrual cycles; however, if a woman does not menstruate because of advancing age or in spite of reaching puberty, then the Quran has specified in Surah Talaq that this period would be three months. The Quranic words are وَاللَّائِي لَمْ يَحِضْنَ. In the Arabic language, the word لَمْ is used for total and strong negation. Hence the expression cannot connote those girls who have not started to menstruate; it can only connote girls who have not menstruated in spite of reaching the age. This is purely an issue of Arabic Language and its Grammar.

Yes, I have read the tafsir and seen Dr. Irfan’s response as well but my question is still unanswered. We now know, through science, that this condition of ‘not menstruating despite reaching the age’ is an extremely rare phenomena known as Amenorrhea which affects less than 0.1% of girls in the US.

So, why is Quran addressing these which can be considered as exceptional cases keeping in view that 98%-99%of the Women/girls do menstruate normally.

The institution of family is created by God and is pivotal to the whole scheme of creation in this World. Therefore, we see in Quran very detailed law-making in this regard, whether it be related to marriage, before divorce, after divorce, regarding iddat for a widow, financial responsibility, head of the family etc etc. Despite the fact that Nikah and Divorce were instiuted as Sunnah by Prophet Muhammad (sws), yet Quran has detailed many issues surrounding this topic and there is no other Sharia in Quran which has been delineated as such. So it is quite understandable that such exceptional or lower percentage cases have had also been discussed in Quran when seen in the context of Islam’s sensitivity towards the institution of family.

No matter how less a number is, if it needs ruling, it will be given the ruling.

There are a very less number of people who remarry their divorced wife after their divorce. Still the ruling is given that how it is possible.
