  • Making Up Salah Missed For A Long Time Due To Illness Or Any Other Reason

I have a question about a lifetime of qadha prayers. I began praying regularly in my 20s, but would often miss prayers in my teenage years due to laziness, unawareness that the qadha prayer could be offered and fluctuating faith levels.

I am aware that Ghamidi Sahb’s view on qadha prayers is that they should be offered as soon as one gets “out of a jam”. This is very helpful, because often the situation is out of our control (e.g., being unable to do wudhu publicly in COVID times).

But how far back does this go? The majority opinion I have found online is that these prayers must be made up through conservative approximation. I find this troubling after having tried it for a month, because it almost “cheapened” my prayer – more about the rakats, less about sincerely praying to Allah.

However, if I reject the notion of the Qadha prayer, then this means that I know I will miss many prayers as a doctor. Sometimes it’s just not possible to leave a sick patient.

    (i) So the question is: why does Ghamidi Sahb support praying nafl prayers with the intention of making up the missed prayers? And how far back should we go to count Qadha prayers?

(ii) Another question: if we are very sick, do we make up missed prayers? I had painful nose surgery this year and suffered greatly when doing wudhu and praying. I almost regretted it because the pain was excruciating. Are we allowed to miss prayer in these circumstances? Should they be made up?

(iii) My uncle has been intubated but conscious in the ICU for two months. He has not prayed because he cannot do Wudhu or Tayamum in his condition. Does he need to keep track of these prayers and make them up later?

More or less, all these points have been discussed in the following thread. Please go though it and feel free to ask any follow-up question in this regard:
