  • Meaning Of Pure Intention In The Context Of Rayakari?

Posted by Abdullah AbdulRahman on August 10, 2022 at 6:07 pm

    Assalamualaikum

What does it mean to have a pure intention and where does come “riya”. Like naturally and instinctively a person wants that other people may know him or show his level but where does come a line where it can be said that it is not for Allah but “riya”?

E.g Ghamidi sahab wrote about Amin Ahsan sahab when Islahi sahab gave a speech:

لوگوں نے بہت داد دی، لیکن وہ منتظر تھے کہ استاذ امام کیا کہتے ہیں

People appreciated him (Maulana Islahi) very much, but he was waiting for the words of Imam Farahi.

Now a person would think that, when you are giving a speech for Allah and for His religion, then why are you even thinking about any words from anyone even if it’s your mentor etc? But we can’t expect why bad intention from Maulana Islahi sahab. So where comes the line?

In Riya kari, one does not have wish to get his reward from God, all he needs people’s acknowledgement and appreciation. On the other hand, when one wants his reward purely from God and does things only to please Him, but also receives appreciations from people and he feels happy it is fine, because he will continue his deeds even if he does not receive appreciations from the people.

But if he expects appreciation from someone it does have some effect of desire for worldly appreciation, and also human is a social animal. Thus isn’t having effect of people’s opinion natural to us?

This is the test. One may enjoy people’s appreciation for his pure intentions for God, but must not pollute his aim with the appreciation.

So it means caring for someone’s opinion even if you are working for God is ok?

And is riya kari limited only to religious things or also to worldly things? E.g doing something to show your competence etc?

And also for example a big dilemma to me, in our mosque people pray Tahiyyatul Masjid very often and has told me to pray also sometimes. Now i am with a Hanafi background never thought about Tahiyyatul Masjid, and now they have said to me some times about that. Now I’m almost the only person in the mosque who doesn’t pray these, and don’t feel to pray also. But they have said me many times and not doing feels immoral and on the other hand, namaz is for Allah then why would i pray for them. What would you say?

Riya is in matters related to God. However, this attitude of Riya may affect one’s intentions in every matter, even which are related to human beings. This may not earn sin but brings bad feelings.

In nafal matters one is supposed to reprimand someone. However, when we accept others’ advice to do good thing and we do it for the sake of their saying, still those good things are done for God.

In principle, one must ask from his heart in such matters whether he is pure in his intentions or not.

@irfan76 if someone tells about a worship deed he did, but he only wanted them to bring this deed into there knowledge without any feeling or want for appreciation. Like for example someone asks about what “did you do all day”, so another person replies ” I did this… Did that… Prayed namaz…read Quran….then did this….and that” now here there’s no want for appreciation for doing a deed but it was just mentioned so that the other person knows or has knowledge of what the first person did. This is not Riya, according to my understanding, is it right sir?

Yes, as I said earlier, it is what our hearts decide. Sometimes we need to dicsus such tings to create an enviornment of piety around us. So it is relative and subjective.
