    Aoa,

I wanna know if I am still eligible for paying zakat if I had given 2.5 lakhs to my cousin. And 2.5 lakh is exactly my zakat amount.

So I had given him 2.5 lakh because he needed it for bank statement to make his bank statement strong for visa application.

So, I paid him and even after result of visa application. He did not paid me back

I did not ask him to pay because he is very close cousin. I was waiting for him to pay me now.

But shortly after it, His mother got cancer disease unfortunately.

So they had only like 70 80 thousands savings at that time.

So, for cancer treatment, there were evey expensive tests as well as chemeo therapy charges.

His total earnings per month will be maximum 50k.

So, I think they have used that amount that I had sent which is 2.5 lakh plus they have also arranged funds.

So total cost of treatment will be around 4-5 lakh excluding diet required for patient.

So, Can I dont pay zakat now because I already given them and they have used it for treatment.

Or if I tell them, that is zakat amount and if they accept, its okay otherwise return so I pay to someone who is really in need.

So in short, they have 50k monthly earning plus they had 80k savings before treatment.

Please Shed your light on this issue.

    Thank you

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking whether or not the money that you loaned to someone and then later realized that he is a deserving person can be considered as Zakat.

Yes, you can do this. However, please understand that one has to sincerely evaluate on their own if they are waiving the loan because they find the borrower to be deserving or doing it because the borrower has defaulted. In the latter case it should be considered a loss and cannot be considered as Zakat.

    Hi Faisal,

    Thanks for answering.

No, borrower has not defaulted but I had given him money and has not returned yet.

I am sure they have used my money for treatment.

How do I know if they are deserving family?

All I know for sure maximum earning is 50k per month.

And they had 80k to 1 lakh savings.

Rest, I dont know if they had more amount than that or not.

Also, I am sure, few other relatives also helped them.

Please help me evaluate if they are deserving or not?

Unfortunately, I or others can only help you in understanding the principle. Determining whether someone is deserving or not is a matter of application. You will have to make a decision about that based upon your knowledge.
