    Assalamualaikum!

    Hello there! My question is that i read that vinegar that is made from Wine is of 2 categories,

    One that was made without deliberate intervention in the process where alcohol turns into vinegar. And it happened naturally. Scholars say that this is Halal totally.

    Secondly, The vinegar that was made by deliberate treatment of wine by adding things like salts etc, or things to convert the wine to vinegar, many scholars say that this type of vinegar is Haram and not permissible.

    For this they give evidence below

    Narrated by Anas ibn Malik (r.a.) –

    “The Messenger of Allah (s.a.s.) was asked whether wine could be changed to be used as vinegar. He said, ‘No.'”

    — Muslim

    Narrated by Abu Talhah (r.a.) –

    “The Prophet (s.a.s.) was asked about some orphans who had inherited some wine. He said, ‘Pour it away.’ He was asked, ‘Could they not make it into vinegar?’ He said, ‘No.'”

    — Muslim

    ‘Umar (r.a.) said:

    “There is nothing wrong with a man buying vinegar from the People of the Book [Christians, Jews], if they sell it, so long as he knows that they did not deliberately process it from wine. And Allah knows best.”

    — Bidaayat al-Mujtahid li Ibn Rushd, 1/461; Kashshaaf al-Qinaa’ li’l-Bahwati, 1/187; Fath al-Qadeer li Ibn al-Hammaam, 8/166; al-Majmoo’ li’l-Nawawi, 1/225; al-Mughni li Ibn Qudaamah, 8/319

    Sahih Muslim 1983

    Anas reported that Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was asked about the use of Khamar from which vinegar is prepared. He said:

    No (it is prohibited).

    After looking at ahadith one can conclude that maybe it was not for a clear prohibition but to stop the storage of wine in the house as a Sadd-e-Zariya for intoxication as the sahabah were newly told to stop drinking wine etc. But the quote of Hazrat Umar Ra supports their argument well in this case. can you explain what is the reality and is it halal or Haram?

    Ps. In every version i saw of hadith of Hazrat anas it was like prophet saying no for use of wine for making of vinegar, but in one version of miskat ul masabih, it said like use of wine that WAS TURNED into vinegar. Here it is,

    Plus, there’s also one thing that i forgot to mention that, many of those scholars that prohibited making of vinegar from wine say that if the wine transformed into vinegar naturally, then the vinegar is not Haram, Or if it was made by some people who deemed it permissible to deliberately make vinegar from wine, like the people of book, Jews or Christian. But if it was made by a Muslim then it is Haram because he made it through a process that was Haram (deliberate processing to turn wine into vinegar).

    So in short, it is halal if the wine changed into vinegar naturally, without human intervention,

    As for one made by deliberate treatment to make wine into vinegar then it if it was made by a Christian or Jew, then it is halal to consume but if it is made by a Muslim then it is Haram to consume because the process was a Haram process.

    Also is it a Rule that anything Haram cannot be made Halal through Haram?

    In principal, when the cuase of Hurmat, is not more, the haram becomes halal. There is not basis for considering human involvement in converting wine into vinegar haram. The prophet’s prohibition seems rightly ascribed to the preemtive measure to make Musims discard wine altogether.

    @irfan76 yes sir i understand your point. But what about the the quote affiliated with Hazrat Umar? Does it provide us any hint about this matter like this is how they understood this rule?

      The same can be said on Hazrat Umar’s statment. It might be a preemptive measure. Principle cannot be compromised for an understanding or application which seems going wrong or inconsistent with the principle, we have to interprete in accordance with the principle or have to discard it, if we cannot interprete it in accordance with the principle.
