  • Should Movie Joyland Be Released In Pakistan?

The movie Joyland was recently banned from releasing in Pakistan because it depicts a love story between a man and a trans woman. Was that ban correct?

In general, how do we decide the limits of censorship while allowing substantial freedom of expression?

The interaction between men and women, their dressing and the content of the movie, etc are all matters of morality and ethics. Our innate sense of morality at an individual level and collectively at a scocietal level (also called ‘urf‘ of a society) helps us in determining such matters. Since we are not sure about the content of the movie therefore we cannot comment on the movie specifically. Depicting emotions of love is not inherently prohibited in Islam, but the way such expressions are portrayed in a movie at instances is something which can be criticized and rectified.

@UmerQureshi JazakAllah for your answer. Based on the video, it seems that Ghamidi Sb. is generally against state censorship of content, and believes that the Ulema should use their religious platforms to educate and guide the people if they believe something is ethically problematic, instead of having the state enforce it through bans. Do correct me if my understanding is wrong.
      Otherwise thanks a lot again!
