Love Of The Prophet Muhammad (sws)
As’salamualaykum,
Often we hear in religious sermons that we should have intense love of the Prophet.
While many biddah’s and artificial love or lip service has emerged in the name of “love of prophet”.
Looking from a practical perspective, a human has more closeness and love with the people he interacts example: parents, friends etc compared with the people he heard but not seen, for example: great great grand parents who are dead and gone.
A human is not in control of what heart loves or does not love.
My question is –
How can we love Prophet more than our parents, friends and all of the world when the same love we can’t show to our great great grand parents ?
Usually hadith of Umar is cited among many hadiths:
Abdullah ibn Hisham reported: We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he was holding the hand of Umar ibn al-Khattab. Umar said to him, “O Messenger of Allah, you are more beloved to me than everything but myself.” The Prophet said, “No, by the one in whose hand is my soul, until I am more beloved to you than yourself.” Umar said, “Indeed, I swear by Allah that you are more beloved to me now than myself.” The Prophet said, “Now you are right, O Umar.”

Alhamdullilah, I have gone through the video but ghamidi sir did not mention about this hadith.
If love of Allah was the aim then how is Umar saying to prophet that “I swear by allah” you (prophet) are now more beloved to me than myself.

This can be understood in the light of Quran 9:24, at the instance when on the one hand there exists a requirement from God and His messenger and on the other a requirement from one of the things mentioned in the verse. If at that time, a person does not gives priority to the requirement of God and His messenger, then this would clearly mean that he holds these things dearer to himself. Islam and faith do not require that these things should not be dear to a person. It only requires that they should not be dearer to him than God, his messenger and waging jihad for his cause.
Since we are all aware how sensitive Umar (rta) was w.r.t religion and was very emotional and excessively strict in this regard. Usually in hadith narrations, we see that Prophet (sws) while commenting on individuals in different scenarios, also give due to regard to that other person’s overall situation, character and committment with religion etc. and used to tailor his statements to that effect. Probabaly that is why this was said when speaking with Umar (rta) specifically.
And this statement itself “Indeed, I swear by Allah that you are more beloved to me now than myself.” can be understood in the light of Quran i.e. ‘more beloved to me than myself at the instance when on the one hand there exists a requirement from God and His messenger and on the other a requirement to get worldly benefit for myself‘. Swearing by Umar (rta) was also indicative of his emotional nature.
