  • Two Shoaib’s In The Quran عليهما صلاة الله والسلام

Posted by A Hasan on December 18, 2022 at 1:32 pm

I vaguely remember someone saying that the shoaib صلى الله عليه وسلم that musa صلى الله عليه وسلم met in madyan and the prophet shoaib صلى الله عليه وسلم are different.

    Does anyone have the reference?

This has been discussed in the Qasas ul Quran by Hifz ur Rehman Sewhaarvi.

So is there only one Shoaib?

The name Shoaib was given to the father-in-law of Moses by Islamic scholars. It seems, they are not only two different people, but have two different names too.

So in the Quran the father in law of musa صلى الله عليه وسلم is not referred to as shoaib?

And just so I’m understanding, the shoaib صلى الله عليه وسلم sent to ashabul aikah- where was this geographically and was this before musa صلى الله عليه وسلم ?

it is another name for Madyan. Ghamidi shaeb writes under 15:78

This refers to the nation of Shu‘ayb (sws). It has been mentioned in previous sūrahs that he was sent to the people of Madyan. There was a huge forest near this city. In Arabic, the word اَيكَة is used for bush and for forest. Here since the attention of the addressees is being directed towards the earthly signs of destruction caused by divine punishment – signs they would see during their trade journeys, the expression اَصْحٰبُ الْاَيْكَةِ is employed to refer to the nation of Shuy‘ab (sws). In the succeeding verses, the nation of the Thamūd are called اَصْحٰبُ الْحِجْرِ for precisely the same reason.

      And this part?

‘So in the Quran the father in law of musa صلى الله عليه وسلم is not referred to as shoaib?’

Yes, he is not referred to as Shoaib. No name of his is mentioned.
