Assalamu Alaikum, I heard that listening to gheebat is also haram.

I’m curious if your cousin who is older than you and is hurting starts backbiting others, and you don’t like it but can’t stop him since you want to provide him comfort in times of stress. But you feel guilty about listening to backbiting as well. In such instance, will the one who is quietly listening be sinful as well?

    Please reply jazak ALLAH

Yes, it is a sinful activity. By continuously becoming a part of this activity, instance after instance, one does become a guilty party as well.

See it as a good opportunity to fulfil religious duty of ‘amr bil maruf wani anil munkir‘ which is required of every Muslim. However, this should be done with wisdom and not haphazardly i.e. you should instead of rebuking your cousing directly, point him to the fact that what good is this talking behind someone’s back going to do to him? other than the fact that you are both becoming a party to the sin and infact doing the other person a favour for the day of judgement by losing your good deeds to him. And even after adopting this startegy a few times, he does not stop; then you can be staright forward about it and deny to become a part of this talk which involves backbiting.

Backbiting relates to haqooq-ul-ibad category, whiih means that in order to receive forgiveness from Allah, first the forgiveness from the aggrieved party must be sought.

An unethical act is not allowed at all, no matter if it is against a Muslim or a Non-Muslim. However, if the matter is to save the public interest or a kind of warning against a person whether Muslim or non-Muslim should be revealed to save others from possible harm. This is not backbiting. like reporting a person as a thief, or about an inappropriate marriage proposal, and your counsel is sought then you have to tell if why it is inappropriate.

Is it backbiting if you discuss about a action a close relative did that the relative does not want to be discussed about.
