  • Validity Of The Friday Prayers Without Khutbah

Believers! [37] [Give due importance to the Prophet, and] when the call for the prayer is sounded on Friday [on his behalf], [38] with diligence go to the remembrance of God [39] and leave aside your trading. [40] This is better for you, if you but know. (Quran Sura 62, Verse 9)

Both Ghamidi and Islahi sahab take “remembrance of Allah” to mean both the Friday Khutaba and the Salat. Islahi sahab writes in his tafseer to this ayat that the word “Zikr” has been used for the Salat in various place in the Qur’an.

    Now, the question is:

    (1) Without the Friday Khutbah preceding the Salat, is the Friday Salat valid? It should be valid without the Khutbah because if one misses the Khutbah and not the Salat, the Salat is still valid. And if one misses one of the Raka of the Salat, one only has to make up for that Raka and not the Khutbah, if one has also missed it.

    (2) Even if it is valid without the Khutbah, the Khutbah may be separately a Fard. But again, missing a Fard makes it necessary to compensate for it. However, one does not have to compensate for a Khutbah.

    (3) But if the Qur’an does mean Khutbah by the word “Zikr” in this ayat, then every act of worship mentioned in the Qur’an is a Fard and so Khutbah should be a Fard. Is that reasoning correct? Is every act of worship mentioned in the Qur’an a Fard?

Which prayer is valid and which one is not will be decided by God for each individual according to his or her circumstances on the Day of Judgement.

What we know for a fact is that on Fridays a Muslim state is required to hold the congressional Juma prayers preceded by a Khutba. The citizens of the state are required to attend the Khutba as well as the prayers, and unless there is any undue difficulty, one should not miss either.

“If your Wudu is invalidated then the Salah is not valid”

In that sense if one misses Khutbah, their Juma prayer is still valid. However, someone opined that the Juma prayer is only valid when the “Imam” in the mosque has given a Khutbah. If he has not, then the Juma prayer led by him will not be valid even for the muqtadis.

Listening to the Sermon of Juma is obligatory on Muslim men when all the conditions of Juma Salah are fulfiled at the state level. If someone misses the sermon and offers only the Juma Salah in congregation, then he has missed one obligation and fulfilled another.

In Sharia, we do not find explicit rulings on compensation in matters of ibadah which are left intentionally, whether it be Salah, Fasting etc. Such an act is egregious nevertheless but the matter stays between the individual and his Lord.

If one misses it unintentionally, then is there compensation? If one misses Salah unintentionally then there is compensation., which we call “Qada”.

If it is unintentional then Qada of that Salah would be as if it were offered on its due time (despite being late). If it is intentional, then there is nothing prescribed in Sharia in explicit terms.
