I read the following Hadith in Sir Ghamidi’s Website … where in the explanation of the hadith Sir Ghamidi says ” اصل میں لفظ ’سُنَّۃ‘ آیا ہے اور جس سیاق وسباق میں آیا ہے ، اُس سے واضح ہے کہ یہ یہاں بطور اصطلاح نہیں، بلکہ لغوی مفہوم میں استعمال ہوا ہے، یعنی وہ طریقہ اور طرز عمل جو برابر اختیار کیے رکھا جائے۔ یہاں اِس سے مراد وہ طرز عمل ہے جو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے اپنے حین حیات مسلمانوں کے اجتماعی معاملات سے متعلق دین وشریعت کی ہدایات پر عمل کے لیے اختیار فرمای
my question is if it is so then why prophet puh did say وسنه الخلفآئ الراشیدین المهدیین was not enough to say فعلیکم بسنتی and that is all!
عَنْ عِرْبَاضِ بْنِ سَارِیَۃَ، قَالَ:۱ صَلَّی لَنَا رَسُوْلُ اللّٰہِ صَلَّی اللّٰہ عَلَیْہِ وَسَلَّمَ الْفَجْرَ [ذَاتَ یَوْمٍ]،۲ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَیْنَا، فَوَعَظَنَا مَوْعِظَۃً بَلِیغَۃً، ذَرَفَتْ لَہَا الْأَعْیُنُ، وَوَجِلَتْ مِنْہَا الْقُلُوْبُ، قُلْنَا أَوْ قَالُوْا: یَا رَسُوْلَ اللّٰہِ، کَأَنَّ ہٰذِہِ مَوْعِظَۃُ مُوَدِّعٍ، فَأَوْصِنَا. قَالَ: [’’قَدْ تَرَکْتُکُمْ عَلَی الْبَیْضَاءِ لَیْلُہَا کَنَہَارِہَا، لَا یَزِیْغُ عَنْہَا بَعْدِیْ إِلَّا ہَالِکٌ]،۳ أُوْصِیْکُمْ بِتَقْوَی اللّٰہِ وَالسَّمْعِ وَالطَّاعَۃِ [لِمَنْ وَلَّاہُ اللّٰہُ أَمْرَکُمْ]،۴ وَإِنْ کَانَ عَبْدًا حَبَشِیًّا [مُجَدَّعًا]،۵ [فَإِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُ کَالْجَمَلِ الْأَنِفِ، حَیْثُمَا قِیْدَ انْقَادَ]،۶ فَإِنَّہُ مَنْ یَّعِشْ مِنْکُمْ یَرٰی بَعْدِی اخْتِلَافًا کَثِیْرًا، فَعَلَیْکُمْ بِسُنَّتِي وَسُنَّۃِ الْخُلَفَاءِ الرَّاشِدِیْنَ الْمَہْدِیِّیْنَ،۷ [تَمَسَّکُوْا بِہَا]،۸ وَعَضُّوْا عَلَیْہَا بِالنَّوَاجِذِ، وَإِیَّاکُمْ وَمُحْدَثَاتِ الْأُمُوْرِ، فَإِنَّ کُلَّ مُحْدَثَۃٍ بِدْعَۃٌ، وَإِنَّ کُلَّ بِدْعَۃٍ ضَلَالَۃٌ‘‘.

The Sunnah of the Khulafa is not just a repetition of the sunnah of the prophet but additionally their inferences too with different applications. So if his successors were righteous their inferences and deductions should also be followed if they prove that they stemmed from the sunnah of the prophet.

This style can also be understood in the light of Quran:
يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَأَطِيعُوا الرَّسُولَ وَأُوْلِي الْأَمْرِ مِنْكُمْ
“Believers! Obey God and obey the Prophet and those of you who are in authority…” (Excerpt from Quran 4:59)
As it can be seen that only mentioning Allah and his messenger would have sufficed but since leaders were going to be first point of contact with the Muslims, they are also mentioned separately. Those leaders will also give rise to certain traditions (political/legal) in line with the framework given by the Prophet (sws) which in normal circumstances should also be followed. However, their obedience is always subject to obedience of Allah and his Messenger as mentioned in the later part of the verse. The mentioning of “وسنه الخلفآئ الراشیدین المهدیین” in this Hadith can also be understood along the same lines and just like the above verse, it is also subject to or needs to be in line with “فعلیکم بسنتی“.
