  • What Is The Term Sadd-E-Zariya?

Posted by Ibrahim Ali on August 5, 2023 at 6:42 pm

What Sadd e Zariya actually is

Is it precautionary measures a person takes in order to prevent themselves from getting into haram,,right???

So does it make it compulsory on a person to follow them as others are doing or it would be a “haram” or “sinful act” to not to follow that way,??

Like when it’s about me I’ll be the one measuring my shortcomings and implying according to myself right??

And if someone is doing more than me or less then me then it’s their measures not mine’s right??? it doesn’t make anyone sinful until they get involved in haram,,

    Right ??

,,do sadde Zariya is something which someone else need to put on a person or do the shariah put it or a person should do it by himself,

Like some directions of Sadd e Zariya is in Qur’an like

For women to hide their Bossom’s correctly, and not to look at eachother with lust nor do act lustfully and immorally, and so on,,,,,!!

    Please clear this out

    Jazakallah,,

  • What Is The Term Sadd-E-Zariya?

Sadd-e-Zariya is a term used to denote the means which are adopted in stopping one from committing a Major Sin. For instance, in order to stay away from adultery, we find several measures in Quran and Ahadith which are of Sadd-e-Zariya nature and are given so that we should be able to distant ourselves from adultery as much as possible.

If such directive is given in Quran and Sunnah then every Muslim should follow it and there is no room for discretion available to the individual. However, since Sadd-e-Zariya directives are by nature based on some rationale (illat/haqiqat), so those matters of Sadd-e-Zariya (in Quran or Sunnah) can be considered as waived if the illat of that directive has either vanished or new circumstances have made that illat redundant (for example: two women witnesses in place of one or no iddah if pregnancy can be ensured with certainty are examples of sadd-e-zariya directives). In such circumstances, there is no sin on the person. But if a person intentionally violates any Sadd-e-Zariya directive without going through the process of determining illat and fulfilling objective of the directive through other means, then it will result in a minor sin.

Directives of Sadd-e-Zariya can also be given by a scholar of Islam after studying rationale underlying religious prohibitions. In such circumstances, an individual can simply follow that advice or he can acess the relevance of that advice with the religious directive and decide for himself whether that advice is relevant or not and whether he wants to follow that advice or not. But if an individual is convinced regarding applicability of that Sadd-e-Zariya advice, then intentionally violating that advice should also logically result in a minor sin.

Who made the term Sadd e Zariya on not watching porn

Is it mention as some directives from Allah or is it made by our elders in order to prevent ,,

And also are we obliged to follow the Sadd e Zariya made by people or we just must need to follow what Allah mentions,,plz answer it briefly

Porn itself is a prohibited activity and should be refrained from because it is Fawahish as prohibited in Quran 7:33. Not watching porn as a sadd-e-zariya of Zina is an additional aspect.

    So it is haram,

The way porn is made is also haram

The activity in it is also haram,

    I agree on it too,

    I was wondering abt anime

They got love anime all abt couple that I’d practically not porn bcz they do their best to not add in vulgarity but it still is a couple series so it might contain something

And also if someone read book abt dark romance

What is the ruling they are so trending on bookstores

If the content is not explicit and can be skipped easily, then it is not similar to porn. Same goes for books.

Is the kiss scene something explicit,?

Others I know it is explicit

So a person can determine it,

    • Umer

      Moderator August 15, 2023 at 6:15 am

      Yes, it should be skipped.

  • Ibrahim Ali

    Member August 15, 2023 at 6:18 am

Hmm I see so the kiss scenes should be skipped

But if someone sees them then?

If it was a real life accident,,

    Or even not

Animation is not humans in actual though

They are animation created by humans,,

    Is it different?

No it is not because it is depicting the same thing.

    Umer Bhai,

There’s a clear-cut difference seen in your opinion on watching porn, you said in this thread that watching porn is “Haram” whereas on anther thread here (Discussion 33647) you and Faisal Bhai both said watching porn in-private is not “Haram” but disliked, and should be avoided based on Secondary Sade-e-Zariya, can’t be declared as “Absolute Haram”.

You further had clarified word “Fawahish” implies when person himself or two people are themselves involved to make it “Fawahish” if you can please clarify it today?

All this creates confusion over confusions quite honestly.

    • Umer

      Moderator September 27, 2023 at 11:15 am

Yes, you are right, this can cause confusion and thank you for bringing this up. I will try to clarify.

There are two aspects to porn that need to be kept in mind:

      i) Porn being an extension to Fawahish.

ii) Porn being a doorway to Zina or when spoken in a broader sense, being a doorway to Fawahish.

Therefore, If by Haram one means whether watching porn should be refrained from or not? then yes, one should refrain from watching such content (both as Sadd-e-Zariya for Zina or Fawahish and to refrain from Fawahish of any sort, even if it is an extension). And if by Haram one means whether it is a major sin like committing Zina or a minor sin, then latter would be more appropriate categorization for watching porn. This distinction was important to make, since word Haram is often misconstrued as a Major Sin among muslims now a days.

Hopefully this will clarify the issue. In case of any confusion please do ask again.

Following may also be helpful in understanding why it’s more appropriate categorization is a minor sin:

Thanks for clarifying Umer Quershi Bhai :)!

There is one more important aspect which you denoted as “Secondary Sadd-e-Zariya” often done by scholars of Islam (not by the religion itself), you did stress on their correct placements & must always be distinguished from “Primary Sadd-e-Zaria” done by religion itself.

I see this is clearly the reason why you confirmed to @dhruv that watching porn in-private is “Makrukh/Disliked” (not Haram or Absolute Haram) in this (Discussion 33647).

Please confirm if my understanding is correct?

The directive of not watching porn is usually extracted from Quran as a Sadd-e-Zariya measure when Quran says “Do not even go near Fawahish – whether overt or covert.” (6:151) AND “Do not even go near fornication“. (17:32). Pornography, in one way or another, has the potential to take one to committing Zina or Fawahish acts, so as sadd-e-zariya all scholars advise Muslims to avoid it.

But in order to distinguish between a major sin like Zina which is absolutely Haram and a comparatively minor act like watching porn, terms like makruh/disliked/Haram with qualification (i.e. minor sin) are often employed.
