  • Prophet (sws) Showed Displeasure On Second Marriage Of Hazrat Ali (rta)

Salam I have heard a story, and I’m unsure of its authenticity, regarding Hazrat Ali (RA) contemplating a second marriage. However, it is said that Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) intervened and advised him against it. The essence of the advice was that hurting Prophet Muhammad’s daughter would be akin to hurting the Prophet himself. While I understand the sentiment behind this, it does raise a question: If this account is accurate and validated, does it not imply that causing pain to other women is acceptable, but causing pain to the daughter of Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) is not? I’m seeking clarity on this matter and would appreciate your insights.

Multiple marriages by men and even by women if divorced or widowed was a common practice. Women were not hurt like today’s women. Given the report is authentic it was about a particular woman, reportedly, the daughter of Abu Jahal, with whom Hazrat Fatima did not approve the marriage and the prophet agreed with her. And announced the his daughter and the daughter of the enemy of God cannot be gathered.

The particular reason of the disapproval is well reported according to my knowledge. The woman was Muslim still the prophet disapproved it. The report misses the details therefore nothing can be said for sure. In such historical reports lack of details give incomplete picture and therefore one should not be misled as the prophet could not go against the teachings of Deen and justice. Hazart Ali had slave girls too and his physical relation with them was never objected.

Just the way Islam didn’t put any restriction on marrying more than one, similarly it has not put any restriction on the bride to stay in that marriage at all costs if a husband indulges in second marriage or to not put second marriage condition subject to approval/permission of the first wife at the time of Nikkah.

After study of all the narrations on this issue in the primary Hadith books, it becomes clear that this objection was raised by Prophet Muhammad (Sws) in his capacity as a father, who excercised his right as a Father-in-Law to ask Ali (rta) to divorce his daughter first before indulging in second marriage. This was done in his capacity as a father, not in his capacity as a Prophet. Therefore, this has no religious connotations. The same demand can be made by fathers today if their sons-in-law intend on indulging in a second marriage.
